I stole a stranger’s parcel and called it as my sculpture for 90 minutes, never opening it or confirming its contents—the actual physical substance of the sculpture. By naming the work a “sculpture” despite having no information about what lies inside, a structure emerges in which three agents—the original object, myself, and the actual recipient, Zelda Miller—form a relationship mediated by a single object while remaining unknown to one another.
The parcel, whose contents remain unknowable, carries overlapping ownership and an unstable identity, causing the work to become othered from me. I cannot know the “essence” of the sculpture, and the work operates as an independent entity already beyond my control. This invisible object, constituted through the uneasy act of theft, contains information, circumstances, and the presence of its true owner—elements I cannot access—and ultimately returns to its original order and disappears.
The work is tied to the ethics of subtly disrupting the tacit rules shared by a community—the system of parcel movement, delivery, and receipt. Standing on a moral boundary, I internalize conscience, guilt, and anxiety, while the artwork constructs its own narrative and status outside of me. This structure reveals the process by which the artwork becomes othered from me within an ethical fissure.
