Pink Carpet is a low and slender object, yet precisely because of this, it reveals the density and presence of the entire space. It compels artists to immediately produce unfamiliar and uncomfortable bodily movements. It forms a new kind of power within the space, discreetly controlling and restraining the artist’s body.
This resembles the way the art institution operates upon artists. Pink Carpet explores the implicit norms and sensibilities that function within the contemporary art system. Today, the art world moves around certain languages, attitudes, and repeatedly invoked social keywords. In order to enter the institution, artists learn particular sensibilities and adjust their language according to the institution’s demands. At some point, artists begin unconsciously moving toward the themes and forms preferred by the art institution, pushing themselves in directions that can be more quickly read and approved. The work translates this structure of self-censorship and self-staging into a spatial experience.
Once an artist acknowledges that they cannot help but remain conscious of the art institution, a feeling of helplessness rushes in. Within that space, what I search for is sincerity. Yet everyone seeks sincerity in their own work. But then, at what density does sincerity truly exist? It is a self-confessional sculpture that moves between desire, helplessness, and anxiety over authenticity, all of which are produced within the contemporary art institution.

핑크 카펫(Pink Carpet)은 낮고 가느다란 조각이지만, 바로 그렇기 때문에 오히려 그 위에 존재하는 공간 밀도와 존재감을 드러낸다. 카페트는 환대의 장치이자 동시에 배제의 장치다. 공간 안에서 새로운 형태의 권력을 형성하며, 예술가의 몸을 은밀하게 통제하고 제약한다. 이 작업은 예술가로 하여금 낯설고 불편한 신체 움직임을 즉각적으로 만들어내도록 강요한다.
이는 미술 제도가 예술가에게 작동하는 방식과 닮아 있다. 핑크 카펫은 동시대 미술 시스템 안에서 작동하는 암묵적인 규범과 감각을 탐구한다. 오늘날 미술계는 특정한 언어, 태도, 그리고 반복적으로 호출되는 사회적 키워드를 중심으로 움직인다. 예술가들은 제도 안으로 진입하기 위해 특정한 감각을 학습하고, 자신의 언어를 제도의 요구에 맞추어 조정한다. 그러다 어느 순간부터는 미술 제도가 선호하는 주제와 형식 쪽으로 무의식적으로 움직이게 되고, 더 빠르게 읽히고 승인받을 수 있는 방향으로 스스로를 밀어붙이게 된다. 이 작업은 그러한 자기검열과 자기연출의 구조를 공간적 경험으로 번역한다.
예술가가 자신이 미술 제도를 의식할 수밖에 없다는 사실을 인정하는 순간, 무력감이 밀려온다. 그 안에서 내가 찾고자 하는 것은 진정성이다. 그러나 누구나 자신의 작업 안에서 진정성을 추구한다. 그렇다면 진정성은 과연 어떤 밀도로 존재하는가? 이 작업은 동시대 미술 제도 안에서 생성되는 욕망, 무력감, 그리고 진정성에 대한 불안을 오가며 전개되는 하나의 자기고백적 조각이다.
