Contemporary art appears to be increasingly fixed in a condition of blocked critique. Specific doubts raised in relation to social themes addressed in contemporary art—such as gender, migration, race, and the environment—are often reduced to ethical failure or misunderstanding, and come to operate as premises that cannot be challenged. This work seeks to expose the ideological nature embedded within the power structures of contemporary art that operate by presupposing specific ethical attitudes.
I invite the viewer into a 127mm circular space, posing a question: “Is the circle standing somewhere in the gallery derived from a rectangular plane?” This question constructs a situation in which viewers are prompted to doubt and judge for themselves. By visualizing the ‘act of decision-making,’ the work explores the possibility of restoring art as a critical discursive space in which questioning and doubt can once again be produce.
동시대미술은 점차 비판이 봉쇄된 상태처럼 보인다. 젠더, 이주, 인종, 환경 등 동시대 미술에서 다뤄지는 사회적 주제들에 제기되는 특정한 의심은 종종 윤리적 결함이나 오해로 환원되며, 반기를 들 수 없는 전제로 작동한다. 본 작업은 특정한 윤리적 태도를 전제하며 작동하는 동시대 미술의 권력 구조와 그 이데올로기성을 폭로하고자 한다.
관객을 지름 127mm의 원형 공간으로 초대하며, “원은 평면조각에서 비롯된 것인가?”라는 사소한 하나의 질문을 던진다. 이 질문은 관객이 스스로 의심하고 판단하도록 만드는 상황을 구축한다. ‘결정 행위’를 시각화함으로써, 질문과 의심이 다시 생산될 수 있는 비판적 담론의 장으로 회복될 가능성을 탐색한다.
